If you are considering a neuromodulator to soften expression lines, you have probably encountered two familiar names: BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport™ Both treatments can smooth wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement, both require little to no downtime, and both can create natural-looking results when administered by an experienced injector. So, what is actually different—and how do you know which one to choose?

At AWSkinCo+ in Franklin and Murfreesboro, TN, we offer both BOTOX and Dysport because there is no single neuromodulator that is automatically best for every patient. Your facial anatomy, muscle movement, treatment area, previous experience, and aesthetic goals can all influence which option makes the most sense for you.

Let’s look at how BOTOX and Dysport compare.

What Do BOTOX and Dysport Have in Common?

BOTOX and Dysport are both injectable neuromodulators. They temporarily reduce targeted muscle activity responsible for dynamic wrinkles—the lines that develop from repeated facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, smiling, and raising your eyebrows.

By relaxing selected muscles, the skin over those muscles can appear smoother and expression lines become less noticeable.

Both treatments:

  • Are non-surgical
  • Are administered through a series of small injections
  • Can soften dynamic facial wrinkles
  • Require little to no downtime
  • Produce temporary results
  • Can be customized according to facial anatomy and muscle strength
  • Require periodic maintenance to preserve results

Neither of these wrinkle-relaxing treatments are intended to change the fundamental character of your face. Thoughtful treatment is designed to soften unwanted lines while preserving natural expression.

What Is the Difference Between BOTOX and Dysport?

Although BOTOX and Dysport work in similar ways, they are different formulations of botulinum toxin type A and are not interchangeable on a unit-for-unit basis.

One practical difference is how each product behaves after injection. Dysport tends to diffuse somewhat more broadly from the injection site, while BOTOX may allow for more concentrated placement. That does not automatically make one better than the other.

Depending on the treatment area and your anatomy, an experienced injector may find certain characteristics advantageous for a particular treatment plan. Patients may also notice differences in how quickly they personally respond to each product and how long they feel their results last.

Your previous experience matters, too. If you have consistently achieved results you love with one neuromodulator, there may be no reason to switch simply because another option is available.

One important point when comparing the two: BOTOX and Dysport units are different. A higher number of Dysport units does not mean you are receiving a “stronger” treatment or more medication in a meaningful head-to-head sense. Your injector determines dosing according to the specific product being used and your treatment plan.

Is BOTOX or Dysport Better for Forehead Lines and Frown Lines?

There isn’t a universal winner. Both products may be used to soften expression lines, but the appropriate product, placement, and dose depend on how your individual facial muscles move.

This is why neuromodulator treatment should begin with a facial assessment rather than simply selecting a product from a menu.

At AWSkinCo+, your injector evaluates your expressions, muscle strength, facial proportions, previous treatments, and the amount of movement you would like to maintain before recommending an approach. For some patients, that recommendation may be BOTOX. For others, Dysport may be preferred.

Does Dysport Work Faster Than BOTOX?

You may have heard that Dysport “kicks in” faster than BOTOX. Some patients do report noticing Dysport results sooner, but individual response varies. With either treatment, neuromodulator results develop gradually rather than the moment you leave your appointment.

Rather than choosing solely based on which product may begin working sooner, it is more useful to consider the overall treatment plan, your previous response to neuromodulators, and the result you want to achieve.

Can You Switch Between BOTOX and Dysport?

Yes. Having BOTOX previously does not necessarily mean you must continue using BOTOX forever, and the same applies to Dysport. Patients may switch products because of their previous response, treatment goals, provider recommendation, or simply because they want to see whether they prefer a different neuromodulator. However, there is also no reason to switch simply for the sake of switching if your current treatment consistently provides results you like.

How Do I Know Which Neuromodulator Is Right for Me?

You don’t have to figure that out before your appointment. Instead of approaching treatment with the assumption that one brand must be superior, it is more useful to start with what you want to improve.

An experienced injector can then consider:

  • Your facial anatomy
  • The strength and pattern of your muscle movement
  • The areas you want treated
  • How much natural movement you want to preserve
  • Your previous experience with neuromodulators
  • How quickly previous treatments took effect
  • How long previous results lasted
  • Your overall aesthetic goals

Those factors can help determine not only whether BOTOX or Dysport is appropriate, but also where treatment should be placed and how it should be dosed.
